Woman in the Sun

Took a few of her on a Manhattan street corner, but had trouble choosing. Which do you think is better, the one below, or this one? New York City

i definitely prefer this one. in the other, the lighting is harsh, and your eye is directed (by the subject’s gaze) to an unknown subject to the right yet at the same time distracted by the big white blob on the left. in this one she’s looking at a much more interesting part of the background, and you can imagine she’s either just missed that taxi that’s passing or perhaps she’s waving at the man in the background who looks like he might be waving back.

i prefer this one: when there’s not a gaze in the photo one is forced to concentrate on photographer’s intention and, in some ways, one is even more free to explore the image; i believe.

well i have to disagree with the other two comments. i prefer the other one because you almost see her face. i don’t really know why i prefer the other, it just draws my attention more.

i also prefer the alternative one. you can almost see the face of the lady, and her gesture to shade her eyes is very beatiful. you can’t interpret the raised arm in the first picture, it only distracts; i agree with jaime, the second one draws your attention.
